Maintaining your central air conditioning system is the key to optimizing the functionality and efficiency of your system, and ensuring your A/C system will be working properly during the hot summer months. Cromwell Energy’s “3 Simple Central Air Conditioning Maintenance Tips” below will reduce wear-and-tear on your system, and save energy.
1. Replace central air filters regularly.
This simple step is the key to optimizing your air conditioning system’s performance. A dirty or clogged filter restricts airflow and significantly reduces AC operating efficiency. The central air filter should be changed at least twice a year, in the spring and fall (more frequent changing may be necessary if you have pets, or are in a dusty environment). It is also important to use the correct filter for your air conditioning system. A pleated filter is recommended. If you have any trouble locating or replacing your A/C filter, Cromwell Energy’s licensed HVAC contractors will be happy to help you.
2. Clean and cover outside central air conditioning system.
The outside unit of a central air conditioning system (or ductless mini-split system) is called the condenser, and can often be cleaned with an ordinary garden hose/nozzle. Simply spray the “fins” inside of the condenser, removing any debris or dirt that may have accumulated. For coils that have not been cleaned regularly, a more thorough cleaning may be required. Remember to shut off your electrical breakers before doing any maintenance. A cover for the outside unit is recommended for the winter to help keep the central air conditioning unit clean.
It is also important to clear away any vegetation from around the outside unit. It is recommended that you keep 18-24 inches clear to allow for adequate airflow around the condenser.
3. Check your thermostat.
Programmable thermostats are an effective mechanism for regulating the temperature of your home. If your central air conditioning system is not “keeping up” with the outside temperature, it may be a sign of a larger problem in the system.
Annual maintenance of all central air conditioning and ductless mini-split systems are recommended by the manufacturer. Cromwell Energy’s central air conditioning maintenance plan is designed with your comfort in mind, and our 15-point tune-up will ensure that your system is operating at peak efficiency throughout the hot summer months!
Quick Summary
| Maintenance Tip | What to Do | Why It Matters |
| Replace or Clean Air Filters | Check filters regularly and replace or clean them as needed (often every 1–3 months). | Dirty filters restrict airflow, reduce cooling efficiency, and can lead to system strain or poor indoor air quality. |
| Inspect the Thermostat | Verify thermostat settings and ensure it’s working correctly. | A malfunctioning or miscalibrated thermostat can prevent proper cooling and cause unnecessary system cycling. |
| Keep Outdoor Unit Clear | Remove leaves, debris, and vegetation around the outdoor condenser unit. | Blocked airflow around the condenser reduces cooling performance and can overwork the system. |
| Clean Condenser & Evaporator Coils | Have coils inspected and cleaned if dirty. | Dirty coils reduce heat transfer efficiency and force the AC to work harder. |
| Check Refrigerant Levels | Have a technician check refrigerant pressure and temperature. | Low refrigerant or leaks can dramatically reduce cooling performance and damage components. |
| Inspect Electrical Connections | Ensure wiring and electrical connections are secure and functioning. | Loose or faulty connections can cause system malfunctions or safety issues. |
| Inspect Fan & Blower Components | Check belts, blower wheels, and fan blades for wear or damage. | Proper airflow depends on these components working correctly. |
| Clear the Condensate Drain | Flush or clean the drain line periodically. | Prevents water backups that could damage your HVAC system or cause leaks. |
| Test Safety Controls | Verify safety switches and pressure controls function correctly. | These systems prevent overheating, pressure problems, or compressor damage. |
| Schedule Annual Professional Tune-Up | Have an HVAC technician perform a comprehensive system inspection before cooling season. | Regular tune-ups help prevent breakdowns, maintain efficiency, and extend equipment lifespan. |
